WPC / ETA

WPC & ETA Approval for Wireless Products

Equipment Type Approval for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, RFID and other RF-enabled products entering India.

◇ Overview

What this is

Products incorporating radio and/or wireless functionalities that are manufactured, imported, or sold in India must obtain Equipment Type Approval (ETA) from the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing, under the Ministry of Communications.

This requirement applies to devices operating on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (Wireless LAN), Zigbee, RFID and similar technologies. A WPC Licence is mandatory for most wireless-enabled devices, particularly those using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi frequencies.

The licensing and approval framework is governed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) India. Depending on the product category and frequency band, manufacturers or importers may be required to obtain both WPC Licence and ETA approval.

◇ How we deliver

Core service pillars

01

Accredited RF Testing

We coordinate testing through recognised, accredited laboratories and prepare compliant RF test reports that pass WPC review on first submission.

02

ETA + WPC Licence Filing

Complete documentation, submission and follow-up with WPC and DoT for both ETA approval and the WPC licence — including de-licensed band approvals.

03

Frequency-Band Advisory

Pre-design advisory so your product team picks bands and modules that are import-friendly, avoiding costly redesigns at the certification stage.

◇ Common questions

FAQs

Are pure receiver devices (e.g., GPS-only) exempt?

Yes. Devices that function purely as receivers — such as GPS-only modules — are generally exempt from ETA approval requirements.

What documentation is required for ETA?

A comprehensive RF test report from a recognised and accredited laboratory is required. This report is evaluated by WPC to ensure compliance with Indian regulatory standards.
